Hi! My name is Feresa Corazon!

I’m a child of the Pacific. I come from a lineage of Visayan fisherfolk in the island of Cebu, Philippines. We live and survive through the ocean’s flourishing—a life that inspired me to become shokoy.

I earned my B.Sc. in Marine Biology from the University of San Carlos in the Philippines, and completed my M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Previously, my research focused on investigating the genomic mechanisms underlying speciation and adaptation in algal systems in extreme environments. using natural historical collection as our lands and oceans’ ecological memoirs.

Presently, I find myself in symbiosis with jellyfish and their algal endosymbionts, studying the gene regulatory networks that underlie regeneration and sustain symbiosis in these metaorganisms to understand the molecular foundations of their cooperation.

At the heart of my work is a desire to nourish collective action toward deeper responsibilities with our oceans and with each other—ecologies of thought rooted in sustainability, care, and flourishing futures.
